What do You plant in Winter?

Post by Tony alony » October 30th, 2016, 8:01 pm

Just curious about what options other members have during fall and winter landscaping. I saw this link with suggestions about what to plant in the fall in the Houston area (zone 8): http://buchanansplants.com/houston-gardening-by-month/
Does anyone have the same options in other zones? What do some of the members plant now in your respective zones?

Here in New Hampshire, we plant reflective marker stakes along the road and driveway so that we can find them in the winter without having the snow plow or snow blower tearing up the edges of the lawn!

Here in NY, we plant snow mountains (this one is 9-10 ft tall). Then we spend the mid-winter days trying to figure out what we will do when the snow plows and snowblowers can't pile it any higher. This year will be extra-special as my winter client is in Buffalo, NY. Lake Effect storms are just peachy.

I usually plant Tulip and other spring flowering bulbs in the fall but not planning anything this year after planting several hundred the last couple years. I may plant some Lily bulbs in the spring depending on what's there now comes back and what doesnt

I use a drill bit auger with my cordless drill for the holes when im planting a lot or my plugger when just a few

The only thing I plant that grows during the winter is Amaryllis which I plant in pots and sit in front window

Pennsylvania doesn't feature the winter wonderland the ones above show, not where I live.

I tend to turn my attention indoors, however, as every night is well below freezing. This year, I'm wintering over a Madagascar periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus). Last year, it was a volunteer marigold. So far, the periwinkle is outproducing the October-sprouted marigold by miles, and blooming like a trooper.

January also marks the start of the plants for the garden. Most of those finish up the last week of March (the marigold and zinnia being the late ones). March also marks when the snowdrops, earliest snow crocus, and aconite start to blossom in the gardens.

And just after that, it's time for a few pansies and violas to brighten up the early spring garden.

My wife and I usually plant our full vegetable garden. Down here we can't carry the garden through the summer months. To hot and humid. Come September we start the prep work. Once planted we might have to cover the tender stuff a few times due to frost, but winter is our big production time.
