Biofilm On Washington D.C. Monuments

Post by Tony alony » October 31st, 2016, 8:29 pm

Our D.C. monuments are being soiled by biofilms in the air. The National Park Service is testing ways to find the appropriate way to slow down the growth. The Lincoln Memorial is affected, along with other monuments in Washington D.C.

I hope they find a solution.

We've been thinking of trying out "Wet and Forget" after reading positive reviews here and elsewhere. Wonder if they'll end up using something similar on the Jefferson Memorial?

This or something quite similar happens in a massive way around the production and warehousing of distilled spirits. Here's a report with pics from Jack Daniel's:

I noted that they point to ethanol vapor at JD's. Given that we started using much more of the ethanol in fuels in the early 2000s, The monument's issues starting in 2006 might be related.
