"Total members 3842" Wow, that's more than I thought. I wonder how many have joined but not posted.

Re: Number of members
We try to stay on top of the spam accounts. We are deleting about 25 per day (and this is during the slow period).
But a lot of folks register and post just a few times before moving on. I think these folks are just looking for a quick answer to a question.
We were well over 5,000 members a few months back. But an audit of the site led us to purge a few hundred questionable/spammy accounts leaving us where we are today.
We are probably going to cut that number back more over the winter, looking to prune long-inactive accounts.

Re: Number of members
Wow TT. When you prune, you prune. 1066 members as of this writing.

Re: Number of members
It all depends on what it is that is being counted - the number is much, much higher if you allow restricted/inactive/etc -- which is the total just under 5000. TT prunes aggressively, but not that strong.

Re: Number of members
So why would there be a spam account on a forum like this? What do "they" get out of it?

Re: Number of members
Some of them are spam accounts. Some are just trolls. Believe it or not, a huge number of those troll/sock puppet accounts were controlled by just a handful of real people. Some of those accounts were well known members which posted frequently.
After some outside help, we found entire threads where every user posting to it was a duplicate account/sock puppet.
Why would they do that? Who knows. I would think they would have moved on by now.
They have other places where they can post. But I guess, deep in their hearts, they still like this forum best.
In any event, not every account inactivated was a troll/sock puppet or spammer. But again, it’s best to maintain a more realistic list of active members.
I’m happy with a smaller, more controlled member list. This isn’t a business for me. I do it because I like helping others, not to have the biggest memberlist (many of whom were not real users).
