What's Your Winter Hobby?

We know that you don't spend every minute of the winter mowing the snow, and we doubt that many spend all the winter studying the science of growing grass.

So what do you do once the grass has been put to sleep for the winter?

Oh, heavens. I read a lot, make soap, indoor garden (I have several marigold already started that will bloom through the winter on windowsills...if carefully enhanced with grow lights), sculpt in polymer clay, make jewelry in wire, polymer clay, gems I make from epoxy, and half a dozen other things.

Usually I have a backlog of things I want to do and never get around to.

Most of my hobbies are year-round, not just winter.

I try to swim laps almost every day (there are a number of days the pool is unavailable or too crowded to get a lane, even shared). I also walk a couple of miles a day. When the weather is nice and there's enough light (doesn't happen much in winter), I ride my bike.

I also brew my own beer. I was an extract/partial mash brewer for years, but recently switched to all-grain brewing when I bought a Mash & Boil (an electric, semi-automated setup).

I'm a huge videogame nerd, and last winter I became obsessed with Cities: Skylines. It is a modern city building game with a huge modding community on PC. While waiting for my KBG to sprout this year, I started a new city. Also been participating in the Fallout 76 BETA on Xbox. Looking forward to a few other games this fall too. Red Dead Redemption 2, Just Cause 4, and Rage 2 are all on my "to-do" list for the winter!

I stick with the year round exercise routine, read lots of books, hit the gun range, do some travel and plenty of snow shoveling. Right now I have lawn burn-out but by February I’ll be chewing at the bit.

I have a show car mustang I do projects on, read, cross country ski, indoor rowing.

I have bad arm and just had surgery on it and I’ve gained 25 pounds in a year I need chop it off this winter I feel lousy so that’s my focus this winter. Right now I’m very limited because arm and sling I’m in will be a while before I can do anything with it.

Just picked up a new one which has been occupying my time lately - sharpening knives, mostly pocket knives. I also collect knives. A recent acquisition is a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 in S110V steel and picked up a Hapstone M2 sharpener. I'm currently working to reprofile the blade and my goal is to get it so sharp that it will whittle and tree top hairs.

That's so cool! Reminds me of the MS-DOS game SIM City I played when I was in grade school. Not much of a computer nerd but I used to play Dota, Starcraft and Diablo.

Ooh! I loved SimCity.

Even better was Lode Runner on the Apple ][, but that's going way back...

I hunt and am working on finishing my basement. I also end up cutting a lot of firewood from downed trees at our hunting property / timber land. Usually 2-3 trees a year, usually some come down end of winter and after heavy ice storms.

I actually enjoy that work. The smell of freshly cut wood and the bite of the cold air.
