KBGKA rear yard reno
Rear yard got torn up last fall when the fire pit got installed. About 2400 sq ft. The grass that’s there was KBG but I hit it with RU.
Only have irrigation in front and side yards so made makeshift irrigation system so no need to move hoses during the germination period.
Midnight, blueberry, and Award for blend.
Using the Pennington seeding mats to protect from washouts and sprayed Tenacity just before I put seed down. I drove over seed with lawn tractor after lightly wetting it rather than rent a lawn roller.
Day 0 and the fun begins.

Re: KBGKA rear yard reno
Part of the reason for seeding in August is that you know the soil is correct temperature for germination. You can't expect seeding in the spring to approach the soil temp's in August. KBG is like a 21-30 day germination in August. In spring when its wet and cold, add a few weeks onto that.
My KBG lawn in Mass greened up quickly, even started growing fast, but as soon as all that rain and cold weather hit, top growth really slowed down. I suspect seed germination would also slow down.
I just started playing around with the seeding blankets; they work, but it's harder to see what's happening under neath them.

Re: KBGKA rear yard reno
Practical reasons why I need to get lawn w established.
We have been 10-20 degree below avg for May. That shipped has sailed.
The quandary I have is how long to wait as I’m not seeing even a single piece of fuzz at this point.
The timing for a tenacity app makes me wonder if I could use a second app now since nothing has emerged as the longer germination time means any weeds not killed by the RU or tenacity that was put down will get a head start.
I’d have expected at least some fuzz somewhere by now.
We’ve had so much rain and cooler weather it’s thrown off the whole reno timing for me.

Re: KBGKA rear yard reno
My spring renovation germinated several weeks later than my fall renovations have. I was getting anxious at 2 weeks, then it started coming in.... normally my fall renovations have high levels of germination at 2 weeks...

+1. Spring germination of KBG is significantly slower than late summer (August 15) seeding, which is part of the reason that spring seeding of KBG is tougher than a "normal" late summer seeding.northeastlawn wrote: ↑May 16th, 2019, 8:30 amPart of the reason for seeding in August is that you know the soil is correct temperature for germination. Re: KBGKA rear yard reno
Put down slightly more than half dose of starter today.
Been a month with tons of rain.
Slightly more germination. Definitely will need time to fill in as it matures.

Re: KBGKA rear yard reno
Update: 3 months in. The soggy cold start in early May meant by the time my grass started to germinate the tenacity has mostly worn off.
Lots of random weeds and crabgrass. So, I used about 150% label rate of Weedbgon max about a week ago. Then it sat on dry hot grass for almost a week before we got rain yesterday. Almost all the random weeds are twisted and dying. About 50% of the crabgrass is dead or dying and the watering in of the quinclorac should help supress more from germinating for a while.
I’ll water the lawn and spoon feed it and assess any further treatments week to week. Hopefully by killing back the weeds it gives more room for the KBG to spread.
Now that I’m beating back the weeds, I expect the lawn to take off in late August as temps start dropping.
I’m also ready to start PreM applications. I’ll be using Dimension.

Looking good KBGKA, nice and even. I like that dark streak in the last pic...little ravine or something?

That’s where the water drains to in that area.
It will all even out as it matures.
For now I’m doing a personal experiment with Tenacity on the crabgrass, I’ll post the results once I’m done. I can do this now as if it goes bad I can over seed in a month and it’s my backyard so I can live with the heavy whitening lol

Re: KBGKA rear yard reno
Mid summer Tenacity treatment as I wanted to see how effective it is on mature crabgrass. I had applied WBG max and it hurt the CG but far from a knockout punch as expected given the maturity and relatively Low rate of quinclorac.
I cut the rear lawn today with my push mower before this pic. There’s some spots where I put compost from the left over I had in the front yard.
Plan is to hit it again on Wednesday to hopefully get the final kill.
The KBG in the lawn seems to be doing well.

Re: KBGKA rear yard reno
Day 8 and my KBG is starting to outgrow the Tenacity stunted crabgrass.
When I look at the whitened CG it’s not the typical crispy and curled death like with Quinclorac. I’m going to apply a second application of Tenacity today but it almost looks like if I didn’t that the CG could push through the whitening. I’m hoping this second and final application today can effectively kill it.

Re: KBGKA rear yard reno
Today I finally got the second Tenacity app down.
It allowed my to hit a 6-7 Sq ft area I missed in round one and to deliver what I expect to be the CG death blow.
Some of the CG is getting brown edges and some are very white and I think could push through the whitening if not for round too.
By mid August the CG should be mostly gone and when the fall feeding begins I won’t be feeding Monster crabgrass as the same time.
End of August I’ll apply prodiamine.

Re: KBGKA rear yard reno
Crabgrass update: I’m 16 days out from first Tenacity app, 7 days from second app. Tonight I’ll spot spray the survivors.
At least 60% of the mature crabgrass looks dead or will die. There’s a couple areas that the CG is white and stunted but not browning yet. The edges turning a brown hue has been the tell tale that’s its finished off.
I have two small 10 sq ft areas I need to reseed so will avoid those areas.
Some notes:
I’m wondering if hitting CG with Tenacity then hit it with Quinclorac after the CG is weak from the whitening is a good strategy. This might be a way to avoid the donut hole behavior of Quinclorac.
This is far from a controlled study obviously. Also I’ve started feeding a bit heavier and watering as the grass is actively growing so that means the CG is also getting fed and watered.
All my miscellaneous weeds I had are Long gone including a few plantains that had sprouted. Currently it appears I only have CG.
If I need any further treatments I’m going to use Quinclorac to try and finish off the CG.
Now that I’ve gone heavier the Color is starting to even out a bit. The lightest area closest to the camera is where I had seeding mats to prevent wash outs.
I’ll spray iron and hopefully get more even color out of it.
