Root Growth/Development relative to temperature

Post by mobiledynamics » September 11th, 2019, 4:32 pm

Is there a ~best temp range~ of how root growth occurs in cool season grass .

I've got some grass pot plugs on standby. The plan is to transplant them on the overseed areas that don't grow out as well, washout etc.
Debating whether there is any -indifference- if I transplant it in Late October/Early November or even ----pushing towards towards mid/late--- november.

I guess somewhere before hard frost and optimum fall temps is when root growth stops. I'm trying to get them in earlier vs. later so root growth will max out in ground from the pot plug...

I'm delaying putting the pot plugs out until at least Halloween - mainly due to the known foot traffic that will occur. Just trying to mitigate the damage that may occur with the foot traffic

Use the Search tool and there is a picture with temperatures that shows top growth stoppage and root growth stoppage.

I can’t find it in search but I know I’ve seen a pictorial of grass root and shoot growth over the season if anyone can find it please link or post it here.

If anyone remembers the thread title, please name it. I went through about 20 pages and did not pull the mentioned thread up

The following is a partial list of soil temperatures (F) at the 4-inch depth that should be of the association with certain biological events.

Cool Season Grasses

90F Shoot growth ceases.
77F Root growth ceases.
70F Maximum temperature for root growth of any consequence.
70F Time to plant grasses in late summer.
60-75F Optimum temperature for shoot growth.
50-65F Optimum temperature for root growth.
40F Shoot growth ceases.
33F Root growth ceases.
20F Low temperature kill possible if temperature subsequently drops rapidly below 20F

Thx. Some of my pots have bottomed out past 6" when I pulled the pot plug to check on root growth. Heh. Hence getting antsy. Never have done pot plug germination till this year, but I suppose roots can be like any potted -plant- and develop circling roots ;-/

Neither could I. That's why I shared the text versions in the two links in the first reply.

Just search online, and you can find many graphical depictions of top growth and root growth vs. temperature or calendar. For example, from here:

Great version of that graph, I always think that everything should be all greened up Labor Day weekend, but from the graph it’s obvious it’s more late September. I noticed things recovering slowly, but it will be interesting if peak recovery is at the end of September and October.

Something that is pointed out in the graph and caught my attention is root growth in spring before the flush. With cool spring temps your grass may look fine despite a lack of adequate soil moisture for root growth. Making a note on the calendar to pay attention to soil moisture next spring.
