The effects of too much rain

Post by Cole » October 31st, 2019, 10:53 am

Hey everyone,

The lawn care season is winding down for me and now I am looking back on the season and trying to figure out what to do differently next year.

One big question I have are the effects of too much water. Mainly, can it cause the lawn to thin out? My backyard is very shady and we got so much rain here this year. At times we were getting 3 or 4 inches a week. In July it looked great and was nice and thick. After August heat and more rain it thinned out. It still was a nice green color, but lost the thickness it had for the majority of the season. I expected it to bounce back over fall, but it never really did. I'm trying to figure out if I could have done something different or if anyone thinks the overload of water could cause the lawn to thin out.

I understand no one knows my exact program as far as what i put on the lawn this year and im not looking for definitive answers here. Im just trying to start a conversation and see what others experiences have been. Now that my season is ending, I'm trying to think about what to do differently next year as well.

It's probably due to less sun, and not too much rain. Your backyard is very shady so come August, the sun is lower and your backyard doesn't get the amount of sun it did in May, June, and July. In the Fall, the sun is even lower so the grass has a hard time recovering.

Yeah, good point. This is my first fall here so I'm not sure what to expect. Our last home was full sun.

I wonder if I could plant a grass that does better back there. Earlier in the year I didnt really want to mess with it because it looked great, but aftwer the full season I'm rethinking that.

I've got some beautiful mutt grass in full sun that sits in water for much of the year, a low spot that rarely dries out and floods after each rain. Technically, it's the neighbor's grass, which is why I haven't converted it to a wetland garden like I did on my side of the line, but I take care of it.
