Pre emergent . Scott’s+ Proamidine ?

Post by ChrisT03 » March 15th, 2020, 8:46 am

I have recently out of panic ( fast warm up) put down Scott’s Halts Crabgrass preventer. This was done around March 10th. Is it ok to also do an application of 65wgd Proamidine sometime this spring?

What was the reason that caused the "panic"?

The Halts at bag rate lasts around 8 weeks. According to research, it's ok to use 2 different dinitroaniline active ingredients as part of a split program. Just apply your prodiamine before 8 weeks comes. Preferably closer to 6 weeks for insurance. In the meantime, the Pendimethalin will help with early-germinating Spring broadleaf weed suppression. Pendi is excellent against Horseweed for instance. Prodiamine is excellent against yellow wood sorrel.

Applied proamidine 6 weeks later and my grass is now covered in poa anua, dandelions, clover. So discouraging. I can’t seem to get it right. Thinking about doing a blanket app of tenacity.

So POA Annua germinated last year, sometime in Aug to Dec. The pre-m you put down now only prevented this years crab grass and what ever else was on the label. Dandelions are easily taken care of by standard weed b gone, the clover with weed b gone clover killer. I’m sorry to use product names I can’t think of the chemical names off the top of my head.

I suggest you follow the weed triangle, look it up on this site.

Week 1 - 1st Weed gone app 7 days
Week 2 - 2nd weed b gone app 7 days
Week 3 - 1st weed b gone clover killer app 14 days
Week 5 - 2nd weed b gone clover killer app 14 days

At this point you will be mid June and getting past weed killing time. There is a certain genius to the person who thought it out, it really takes out most of the weeds people have.

Tenacity can kill POA-Annua but you better off learning how to ID it from the seed heads and hand pulling what you can, or if it’s still cool enough, early June is a good time to kill POA-Annua if it’s stressed from warn dry conditions.

You need to catch up on your reading, and discern why your identified weeds (above) are the ones that you're seeing - there are no surprises in your list.

Poa Annua: germinates in the Fall
Dandelions: perennial weeds
Clover: some varieties are perennial, some are annual

What's in common about the weeds that you're seeing? They are either germinating when you don't have a Pre-M in place, or they are growing from perennial roots. Pre-M's don't have any effect on things other than germinating seeds.

I purchased "compare & save 2,4-D broadleaf weed control". Seems like it should do the job most of the weeds. I fertilized about 3 days ago so ill wait a little while for the fertilizer to do its magic before I apply anything (as suggested in the triangle approach).

2,4-D is one component of Level One of the Triangle. You are far better off with a 3-way product for Level 1.

Chris, you're right about boosting the metabolism of the weeds before hitting with the kill...

What would you suggest for a three way product?

A good product with a combination like 2.4D, Dicamba and MCPP comes to mind.

Just so I have time to buy the supplies, I’m posting pictures of the grassy weeds infiltrating my front yard and the second one is in the back. Please help ID and suggest product to use. Thank you!

I hate always being the Doubting Thomas, but I want to get this right.

Those pictures, while they are nice and close on the seedheads, don 't provide enough information to make a positive ID. That's because Poa Annua and Kentucky Blue Grass have somewhat similar seedheads, but there are questions, descriptions and properties that make it easier to identify which one you're dealing with.

A few questions/statements:

(1) Are the seedheads sort of even across the entire lawn, or are they in patches? Are there color differences in the grass in patches?
(2) If they're in patches, could you take a picture from a bit farther away that shows a patch and an adjoining area that doesn't have the seedheads?
(3) Who told you that you have a Rye lawn?
(4) Statement: you need to sharpen the mower blade

On the first picture (front yard) it is pretty evenly spread and the color isn’t too much different.I’ll add another pic below if that helps. In the second picture (back) it is growing in patches and the color is def lighter. I’ll also add another pic below.

Honestly I’m very much a beginner and I looked at pictures online to tell what type of grass I had. I know I’m probably wrong.

I had my blade sharpened in the beginning of the season. Guess it’s time for another sharpening, I was hoping it would last until I switch to my mulching blade which is freshly sharpened.

In the first picture (looking toward the back), that seems to be the type of clumpiness I'd expect from Poa Annua.

The second picture (looking toward the street) is out-of-focus and I can't make out whether your lawn is just in the seeding stage, or whether there is a weed tangled in with the grass.

I think the pictures are indicating a nice NoMix ("Northern Mix") lawn.

What height are you mowing the lawn at? That seems pretty tall, and that could be why the grass tips look shredded. What height is it when you mow, and what is the final height after mowing?

I keep it at the second highest setting. I will take measurement to be exact and follow up tomorrow. I’ll also take a better pic of the front facing the street.

Height before is 4 inches , height after is 3 inches. I was cutting too high before. I adjusted the height of the mower. Seems better now.
