Snow on May 9th? Really?

Post by andy10917 » May 7th, 2020, 8:42 am

As if this year isn't crazy enough, they are predicting Snow on Friday night into Saturday morning here in the Lower Hudson Valley. It may be only an inch or so, but generally I start prepping the lawn for Summer around May 15th. The Lilacs are ready to bloom!

This is gonna put a bit of a damper on mowing and lawn work this weekend.

Yeah, that's got to be really messing with you guys up north. Not going to be that bad down here. Going to fertilize front yard/w 2nd dimension app.(65 degrees) Supposed to get down to 30 Saturday morning. Thinking if this summer stays relatively cool the Annua and Triv will be around longer than we would like.

I guess that I'm going to have to haul in the sod pots. Also, between the Kung Flu virus and cold weather, the golf course that I work at has gotten precious little play so far this year. I'm told that the greens and fairways have never looked so good. :banghead:

Seeing we had such a mild winter....
I had a feeling that Mother Nature was going to catch up with us. :club:
Snow expected here also Friday into Saturday in the valley, with temps in the 30's :banghead:
Last year, at this time, I was mowing every 3 days.
This year, the grass isn't growing much. I only had to mow a couple times after 5-6 days in between.

I moved to Utah in 1993. It's not really unusual to get snow in mid May.

I think it had only snowed in June twice since I've lived here.

At higher elevations, it snows even later than it does here.

I'm counting on the snow to water in my second split app of Dimension.

Woke up to a dusting. It’s pretty chilly this morning. I had some plans to start prepping things in the back but I’m postponing that

Yup - got just under an inch. It all melted by mid-morning. No apparent damage to plants showing yet.

No snow this morning. Very windy and cold however.
A couple of snow squalls this afternoon.
I'm more concerned about tonight.
Freeze warnings are already up.
I worry about my flowering crabapple tree, lilacs and perennial plants that have come up.
Sometimes New England's weather......

Oh hell - it keeps switching back and forth between heavier squalls and the sun being out. Nuts!

I found some damage this morning - all of the salmon-colored new-growth on my Japanese Andromedas (Pieris Japonica) turned brown and shriveled. One of the Andromedas is over 100 years old. I'm sure it isn't a threat to the plants' health, but Andromedas are interesting in that they have so many different phases over the season - missing that phase is disappointing.

Several andromeda shrubs we have had new growth turn brown in a frost a couple weeks ago. Crazy weather.

I have one of those andromedas in the front of my house.
I had to check to see if there was any damage that Andy was describing and it looks like it's ok.
It's under my overhang, maybe that protected it.

Yet another freeze warning overnight - that's five in a row. Yet tomorrow will be 80 degrees. I start summer prep on May 15th most years - I'm still in wake-up mode this year.

We got hit with 27F after mothers day. My roses took it on the chin.

Latest frost on record.

Around here they always say dont plant annuals until Mothers Day.

Throw that one out.

P.S. the hydrangeas I transplanted to make room for hostas are probably dead.

Yeah, I found additional moderate damage today (last frost was 05/13) on my Japanese Painted Fern bed. They probably will look damaged for the season.
