Grass Seed

Post by mvftw » May 20th, 2020, 1:32 pm

I usually use sun/shade seed (long Island). Lawn is good, just looking to fill-in some spots. Area to fill-in is mostly sun.
Is there a preferred brand and or seed type.
Thx...

What mix do you have today? How big are the areas you’re trying to fill in?

The best grass is the grass that meets your expectations today, and for as many years as you will have it. If you just want an "acceptable" lawn, then a sun/shade mix will meet your needs. If you dream of having the best lawn on Long Island, then you'll need to get into more complex stuff and be willing to put in the care it will take to make it meet its genetic potential.

Brands don't matter, ingredients do. Make sure that you're buying grass seed and not a bunch of filler and additives -- some seed bags contain as little as 8% actual grass seed.

Also, be aware that grass seed is a rather small part of the cost of maintaining the lawn over the course of a decade or so.

I'm using Scotts sun/shade mix. Only filling in what the squirrels dug up. Lawn is in good shape. A bunch of holes the size of an softball...

I just worked with a company in the buffalo area and I live on Long Island as well. They had helped me with my kbg mix Reno a few years ago and helped me pick seed for my current hellstrip Reno.

Got back to me within hours and had 10 lbs of tttf in 48 hours.

Google grass seed Buffalo NY and they should come up first. Good luck.

I believe there is some sort of a farmer's association in Riverhead called the Long Island Cauliflower Association that sells some top quality seed. Not sure how far you are from Riverhead, that might be a place to head to. I'm in no way affiliated with them, I had happened to hear of them from a relative who lives in LI(East Setauket).
