Bad news regarding Bay State Fertilizer

Post by SemiOrganicConvert » May 5th, 2020, 10:24 am

Just got off the phone with Carl. No Bay State Fert now and maybe not even when things get back to normal. The direct to user program may be being killed off.

It started out as a measure to protect their workers from getting exposed to the public as they come in for pick ups. And that I can certainly see. But it appears that the powers have perhaps capitalized on this situation to end the program. Carl is very disappointed with this turn of events.

Please join me in a letter campaign to Fred Laskey, Executive Director of the MWRA. It may be the only way to get this option of such an inexpensive and potent source of fertilizer restored.

Thats disappointing, I had a feeling when that article appeared in the Globe last year that BSF days were numbered.

Luckly I probably have enough bags for the year, but I will be stuck getting name brand milorganite from this point on.

Post the info, and Ill be glad to write a letter in support.

I don't think the subject matter from that article months ago has anything to do with what SemiOrganicConvert has shared, which is that the "direct to user program may be being killed off". That doesn't mean whatsoever that BSF's days are numbered, only that direct consumer sales may end. It may mean that they'll ramp up retail sails if they don't have sufficient municipality demand and whatnot. Or, not likely, but I'll cross my fingers, maybe they'll resume delivery. Please, oh, please make it so.

I can write a letter/email if you think it'd help.

This was something that Carl mentioned as a possibility.

The BayState website says fertilizer is available for scheduled pickup (no walk ins). There also appears to be a online payment portal so you don’t have to pay via check. Has anyone successfully purchased any recently?

Bay State website now says sorry, sold out. Check back in mid June. Didn't take long to clean out whatever inventory they had. I was planning on picking up 25 bags, guess I'll keep watching the website for when the buying window opens up again.

Thanks for sharing the news! I just looked at the web site this morning to consider going to get my annual supply, but saw that they were sold out until June. Hopefully they will continue with the "direct to user program" as I think the program is a win-win for both MWRA and the users of Bay State Fertilizer.

Website announced limited supply yesterday afternoon (6/1). Emailed Carl and he replied this morning (6/2) to come today as they only had 8 pallets available. Picked up 25 bags at 10:30 am and they only had 2 1/2 pallets left after my half pallet. By the time I got back to Methuen at 11:30, website said "sold out" again. New supply expected next week. Stuff is like pellets of gold. Anyone ever talk to Carl about sales to individuals and whether we are simply excess stock after municipal and commercial customers or they just have the ability to make small quantities and it just goes fast?

Just found this post after emailing Carl this weekend with no response to date.

Website says they will only sell directly in 1 ton quantities, otherwise need to purchase from a local store. The store sells at $7/bag, which probably doesn't make worth my time after renting a trailer and driving 3 hours round-trip. Would be willing to kick up my order to 1 ton if they still sell at $3.50.

Does anyone have an update on the situation?

I just found a thread that I believe answers my questions -funny how you miss things when trying to use forums with your phone:) . Looks like price is still $3.50 and probably best to reach Carl by calling him directly

I just made the trip up today for a ton pallet.
Easynpeasy, though I did reserve/pay late March when they had inventory. Kim told me it would probably be June when they have more stock.
