Spot seeding after Pre M

Post by southern-ct-4 » May 21st, 2020, 7:12 pm

I've killed off (glyphosate) some patches of Triv/something here and there, and I want to seed those areas.

Do I just lightly (or more than lightly) rake out the dead grass to disturb the soil/break up the Pre M barrier (I know that disturbing the soil too much could bring more Triv seed up, but I need to disturb it in order to break the barrier, correct?).

Thank you

If you had triv in those spots, your better off digging those spots out and replacing the soil just to be safe. That would nullify any pre-m you used.

I installed a sprinkler this year after I applied my pre-m. I backfilled the sprinkler heads with new soil and reseeded with PR, seeds germinated no problem.

Lol just put a post for the same issues. Wouldn’t a layer of topsoil be suffice to allow seeds to germinate? Sorry don’t mean to hijack your thread

The thing is Triv grows from stolons, if you leave any part of a stolon in the ground the Trip will be back. That is why people say to dig out the whole area.

I went ahead and roughed up the soil a bit, seeded, sprayed tenacity, and covered with peet moss.

Question; can I spray more round up over the area (which was seeded a few days ago) or is it too late for that? I'm already seeing some grass coming up (I assume triv that survived) so I want to kill it off. Or will the roundup now possibly affect the kbg seeds? Should I just pull whatever I see coming up? I could also try to paint it vs. blanket spray.

Thanks for any thoughts.

If your seeing Triv coming up, you have already lost the battle, it's just going to come back again. Like Northeastlawn stated, better to dig out the soil in that area and replace with new topsoil. If the area isn't too large, you can go to HD and by bags of topsoil that will work fine. Also make sure you go at least 6 inches in each direction as well when your digging out the area.

Thanks. If I go this route, how deep do I dig? Some areas ended up getting a bit large and too much for me to dig out most likely.

I would dig out at least 4 to 6 inches deep.

Thanks and ugh, way too many spots for me to tackle that.

What is everyone's thoughts on something along these lines:

-- Rough up the soil to try and get all triv seed (that's not too far down) to surface so it germinates
-- Fert & water to help it grow
-- Roundup whatever grows over the next few weeks
-- rough up soil
-- fert/water
-- round up
-- repeat a few times
-- do a regular reseed in the late summer

Is there a chance that this would kill all the triv? Or at least all the triv that's near enough the surface to matter?

I know I'm grasping at straws but just figured I'd ask (as it's something I've been thinking of trying, at least in smaller or out of the way areas that I don't care if they are dead for the next few months).

If your going to wait to re seed until mid August, then I would say it's a good plan. Keep encouraging the Triv to grow by water and fertilizer and keep killing it.
