What are these 'holes' in my yard?

Post by southern-ct-4 » June 24th, 2020, 10:21 am

I've been noticing more and more of these, spreading across my yard. They had been confined to one area for a while, but I just noticed they are spreading. I usually think it's related to squirrels and hickory nuts (we have a big hickory tree), but I haven't seen any hickory nuts this spring. Perhaps they are digging up buried ones? I've noticed no activity/shells/etc, like I normally would in the fall/whenever I usually see the hickory nuts, so I'm not sure if it's related or not.

Thank you.

Apparently it's squirrels trying to dig up the insides (hence why I didn't see any shells) of the hickory nuts that they previously buried...
