Lowered the mowing height from 4" to 3.5" - the march downward begins...

The "tired leaves" have started falling just a little later than average. There's yet another sign that Fall is approaching. The "tired leaves" are leaves that fall off of the trees onto the lawn 4-6 weeks before the Foliage Season begins, and do not change color before falling. It's the equivalent of the "shedding period" of the lawns, but limited to the trees.

The Labor Day period has started...

So I mowed yesterday and the weather person said spotty showers for today so I didn't apply my fertilizer.
Of course I wake up to a light shower about 6 am...then it became a little heavier "shower"
Of course they changed the forecast and now said rain until noon.
I checked the radar and saw that my area was going to get some decent rain.
I deceided to go out after the light shower became a little heavier shower and dropped my fertilizer. (30-0-4) with Iron
I know the bag says "apply on dry lawn" but the 10 day future forecast shows nothing.
So I figured pull the trigger and drop the fertilizer on my wet lawn.
I also dragged out my hose and gave the lawn a hefty dose of water to be sure none of the fertilizer stuck to the grass blades.
It is still a gentle rain going on now.
It appears we will get a total about 1/4" or more rain throughout the day.
I hope that's enough.
This is the first synthetic fertilizer to my lawn this season.
I'm crossing my fingers and hope I didn't make a mistake.

BTW I did put a cover over my broadcast spreader so the fertilizer stayed dry.
It did spread evenly.

That's perfect, actually, and washing it off the blades was flawless. This should work out absolutely perfectly and you'll see effects in two days. :D

MorpheusPA We actually had "gentle rains" pretty much all day.
Perfect for the fertilizer! :good:
Silly weather people

I looked back at my notes that I've been taking since 2013.
This is usually the time (first few days of Sept) that I've dropped my fertilizer.

Yesterday I overseeded the ~600sqft front yard section, applied tenacity, peat moss and watered it all in. Today I came home to find about 20' of tracks into my side yard, a 2'x2' patch of bare dirt, and a line around the perimeter of my lawn where the utility company came and pulled cable underground :banghead: . I guess I'll wait until Saturday before I make any movement, then go on vacation for a week and see where she stands when I get back.. Yay.

Yeah, there seems to be no better way to get a utility company to come and install something in one's yard than to sow seed or do some regrading...

I feel for you!

You know it's fall when the squirrels know it as well.
Seems like over the past few days, they have been busy as lottsa holes here and there. They have started hiding/storing their food

Applied milo at the bag rate to the front yard and about half the bag rate to the new sod in the back. I ended up applying 3oz/k of generic baby shampoo to the whole yard. The back is new and draining poorly, the front has compaction from construction vehicles driving on it during the renovations. Thought about BLSC, but didn't have all the ingredients.

It's Urea Application #1 Day, and I feel like I never got a break this Summer - it was like the Spring Flush almost never ended. I only got a bit of a slowdown for three weeks. And I'm gonna pour fuel on the fire?

Not getting marriage bonus points for scheduling all this work on Anniversary Day #39 :blackeye: :blackeye:

Happy Anniversary, Andy!

I mowed my mother's and removed a very-recently-deceased squirrel from it. It looked like natural causes, possibly a heart attack or accidental fall. Perhaps he was pushed.

I mowed off everything and early this morning was out inspecting the reno area. Had some straw that was a bit Too thin in spots so I threw down some seed and covered with more straw.

Ran down to my mom and dads and helped my dad (he had his hip replaced in June) with some yard work. He then took me down into the woods to show me ginseng plants he found. I’ll post a pic in a thread

Overseeded some spots in the back and topped with peat moss. Spread some in the woods to hopefully help with erosion too. Also, sprayed some kelp and molasses to feed the microherd in back yard (trying to improve ability to handle occasional dog pee on establishing sod).

Yesterday I overseeded spots totaling about 4000 sq ft. I know I’m a bit late but was up in Vermont last week and didn’t have enough seed to do it earlier (spring is the time to obtain seed, as many here state). I was able to get 25 lbs of Gold Tag Bewitched at a decent price. I used some about 6 lbs and will save the rest. The spots were where I had pythium damage (I think, not confirmed in a lab) and where I used Mesotrione to hopefully get rid of some bent grass areas (don’t know where that came from but I think birds or deer).

I wandered around in vain looking for seedling sprouts. It's been raining everyday since Sunday, but nothing yet. (Mazama KBG)

Since Milo kicked in from my Aug. 14 application...
and now the 30-0-4 fertilizer I applied on Sept 2 is kicking in....
I've been mowing every 4 days....
BTW my overseed is coming along nicely also.
This morning I mowed and then the rains came.... :yahoo:
Love when that happens. :amen:

Not so much today as all week.

We had a wind event Tuesday morning starting at midnight and going to noon. Gusts got as high as 99 mph. Power went out at 3:30 AM.

It didn't come back until 7:30 Wednesday. But I guess I'm lucky, because the website said I should preorder to be without power through Thursday. And there are still tens of thousands without power.

Internet was out until some time Wednesday evening (I was gone when it came back, so I'm not sure when it came on).

So on Tuesday, I thought my only outsider access for a while would be my phone. I got the bright idea to charge up some battery packs using the cigarette lighter in my car. That won't use much electricity, I told myself. And if things are still going on tomorrow, I'll unlatch the opener and manually open the garage door and start the car. You can probably guess where this is going. When I got up, power was back, so I no longer needed the power packs, but my car battery was completely dead.

Lots of trees down. Surprisingly not much damages to houses.

I lost some branches from a tree and one small piece of trim.

My rain gauge says 1" of rain yesterday.
I swear the grass grew an inch overnight.
Deceided to spot spray CCO to the little clover and wild violets I have.
WBG to dandelions and other broadleaf weeds.
I think I will drop my HOC to 3" next time...
which at the rate it's growing it will happen on Sunday. :)
Not complaining

7 pounds per thousand Milo down today on the lawn to gently knock a little more fast N into it (Milo does have some) and a touch more organics into the decay curve in September and October since I'm low this year. Plus I figure I can use the iron because why not?

I mowed yesterday, the grass is growing like mad as rainfall says September and temperatures say late August.
