The perrenial ryegrass in the backyard required more overseeding work than I wanted to do.
So 41% glyphosate:

Just kidding, I only needed a quart. :)

And, after reading the label too quickly, waiting for the kill for more than a week, glyphosate was reapplied properly and the next day, July 30 ish, the ryegrass is gonegot a good kill. Read twice, apply once?

Now, I'm ready to go!! but I post to the site, asking about dropping seed early. Andy talks me down, LOL, and I wait until ......

August 15 arrives. Reasonable weather, supplies mostly at hand. Let's do it.
First, Scotts starter with Tenacity, then tall fescue seed.

Yes, that's a lot of "other crop" and weed seeds, but I'm impulsive and this package is $69 for 50 lbs. I cave. Should have asked the forum to reign me in again, but it's too late now.

Follow with peat moss. My Menard's has 2.2 cubic ft compressed for a great price. Pick up 15 for about 3000 sq. ft. I use the leaf blower method for 2/3s of the work and the dust pan for the remaining touch up. Marking out grids/sections was useful. Removing the output tube from the blower was much better for control and speed. Security cam frame:

Hoses, sprinklers and timers are set and adjusted:

Aug 20: Bonus, germination is quicker than expected.
Image

So time in this week, a timer fails to start any valve. Off to Lowes, where, another bonus, 4 valve timers now cost half what they used to!!

Aug 29: A few thunderstorms arrive in series for 4 inches in 8 hours. I have mulch all over but no washout of seedlings. All in all, good results. I want to do something. PATIENCE, PATIENCE, find another project for distraction. :)

The poorest performing areas are the same year after year, although the difference between best and worse seems to be less. Yes, a soil test is in order.

Sep 11: We had 3 inches of rain earlier this week, so timers were shutoff. That rain really kicked the grass into high gear, so after the soil firmed up a bit, first cut.

Now, back to the seed label. Other crop seed and weeds seem to be weeds that I'm familiar with and a grass. This grass is evenly distributed throughout the area, counts to about hundred plants over 3000 sq ft, grows faster/taller than the other new grass and looks like this:

I have not tried identifying this yet. Please comment if you have an idea what it is, or if you have a favorite grass ID web site to share. Thanks.

"Other Crop" is things that may be grown commercially, but aren't the identified seeds. Poa Trivialis show up as "other crop".

Please not triv!!!

I've been surfing grass ID sites since I last posted and I'm thinking some type of tall fescue and specifically K-31. Since I just cut, I'll need to wait until I get another specimen to really review, but right now from the pic, I think:

Rolled vernation
No prominent mid-vein
Flat, pointed leaf tip
Ligules absent
Auricles stubby or absent
Collar continuous

Please not triv, Lord. :amen:

I've always used a slightly different vowel in the second word of "Other Crop."

Nice pictures. Congratulations on your success. If you only have 100 tall grass plants, can't you hand pull them?

Thank you. My success is all about following the advise on this site. I failed repeatedly before finding aroundtheyard.com .

I've been pulling here and there and plan on turning up the rate as I have time.
