KILL IT! KILL IT WITH FIRE!
(cough) That is to say, yes, that looks like P. trivialis. I'd be spraying that.

Re: Poa or ????
Looks like POA T to me. Having tried all the other solutions I think next year I will try to buy a roll of kbg sod and use that to patch poa T spots that I have dug out. I'm not even going to try spraying it with anything. My existing lawn is all kbg. It may not match perfectly but it will be better than the poa T spots.

Re: Poa or ????
You'll hear a lot of opinions on that. I've had a problem with it and taken it out with Tenacity. Others say no. I've been successful due to being...tenacious...with the Tenacity. If it starts to recover, I spray it again. And I make sure it goes into winter and summer hurting badly since those are stressful times for it.

Man, you had my hopes up!
Andy, is your experience the same as MorpheusPA with Tenacity and Triv? And do you agree that I'm actually fighting Triv from what you see above? Any other advice?

Re: Poa or ????
No. My experience is that Poa Triv can be knocked down with Tenacity, but almost always returns to some degree. I can't speak to whether going over the 16 oz/acre annual limit could work by just suppressing it until it ran out of energy to return - I do not overapply herbicides. Now, after 9 or 10 years of this, I've pushed it back toward the margins of the yard, but with wooded areas on three sides, it is always trying to re-establish itself.

Interesting. What approach did you take to push it back towards the margins of the yard?

Re: Poa or ????
Andy can you summarize what you see as the best strategy for Tenacity on Poa T? Dosage, frequency, time of year, etc? Also are you a proponent of MSO? Thanks

Re: Poa or ????
OK.
I use a blanket app of Tenacity after green-up in the Spring (late April around here) at what I call a "diagnostic dose" (4 oz/acre) to light-up the Poa Triv (and any Poa Annua that didn't get taken out by the Fall Pre-M). I do a 2nd dose two weeks later, then decide on whether to treat significant Poa Triv outbreaks with "Certainty" just after Memorial Day. Certainty works best from June 1st until September 1st. If I get Poa Triv breaking through in the early Fall, I suppress it with Tenacity again. Next year, rinse and repeat.

Re: Poa or ????
So the tenacity lights it up and the certainty takes it out. What dosage, timing and frequency do u use for the certainty? And do u use mso?

Re: Poa or ????
It's not (at all) that simple, but it's getting too late to write up the detail and nuances. Maybe in the morning....

Re: Poa or ????
Yeah, this is going to be a tale and a half. It's why I use the OD of Tenacity instead. Great idea? Not really, but it gets the job done and my guilt level is minimal...

Re: Poa or ????
My statement about using the Tenacity/Certainty regimen saying "it's not simple" is more about your commitment and tolerance level for fugliness, than they are about technical application considerations...
Many people (including lots of members) don't even care to see the whitening that Tenacity causes. If you fall into that camp, the combination treatment for Tenacity/Certainty is not for you. You'll be looking at a 4-6 week of white grass, followed by 2-3 apps of Certainty at 21-day intervals, which makes the application areas look "muddy" and sick. Put it all together and you're looking at having parts of your lawn look like crap for almost a whole season. And that's not a guarantee that it works (it doesn't work as well if the Summer turns out to be cool and wet). Many members start off with the regimen and talk about their commitment, but quit when the lawn shows the "Certainly Certainty" symptoms, and the spouse starts asking why the lawn looks sick and how long it's gonna be like that.
Certainty was originally sold for both cool-season and warm-season grasses, but isn't marketed for cool-season grasses any more, probably due to customer complaints about the fugliness. That doesn't mean it doesn't work - it does when conditions are right.
I can't remember the rates off the top of my head, but I know the write-ups on this site are correct - look them up.

Re: Poa or ????
Thanks Andy, I have been around here a while, but still got a lot out of that. I always forget about the commitment to have the ugly lawn and sacrifice a whole season treating whatever you're treating.
Last summer I tried stretching out the watering to kill all the poa-annua I have, the lawn was in rough shape the following spring and I lost the nerve to hit it with Tenacity. Then I was going to wait until a warm dry stretch sometime in late May, but by then I was trying to encourage spreading and wasn't;t going to do 4-2oz/ac weekly apps and loose the spreading I really needed form the KBG.
This year the lawn is looking really good, but i know i have a lot of poa-annua that made it through the summer. The one thing I have to try again is the 4oz/ac diagnosis app of Tenacity to see what lights up, but from experience I don't seem to get my poa-annua to get bleach white after a single 4oz/ac app, or at least I am still not experienced enough to tell the difference between KBG thats whitened and poa-a thats whitening.
It seems very subtle to me, or it could have been my whole lawn was poa-a :-(
