I can understand why bread and milk always run out first in stores, but why toilet paper? why?

I can understand that too, but people don't wipe their @$$ more often because of the storm, of course if they bought too much milk and they turned bad that's a different story.

It's funny how no one has mentioned their fireplace. Cooking, heat, and to a certain extent, light.
How come?

Edited to add: steamed vegetables or soup is more beneficial than energy bars.. LOL

I read an article that supposedly traced the milk and TP things back to specific incidents.

I don't remember the details of which storm it was, but there was a newscast where they said something about milk becoming harder to find, which led to a run on the remaining milk. Then that part made the national news, and the next time there was some sort of impending natural event, people remembered that "milk runs out when things like this happen" and bought up all the milk, making it a self fulfilling prophecy.

And the TP thing goes back to another news story. The reporter said something about stores requesting that people only buy what they need so everybody could have enough, then made a joking comment along the lines of "If I'm going to be stuck at home for three weeks, I know I'd need a lot of toilet paper." That caused a run on TP in that area, which led to news stories of all the TP flying off the shelves, which led to more people hoarding it, which led to more stories, and toilet paper ran out all over, which then made national news and so on.

So those are just part of the national psyche now.

Keep a stash of rags on hand. They burn just as well as TP. :rotfl: :rotfl:

Big Northeast snowstorm projected...

Interesting to see Washington and Baltimore grind to a halt yesterday when they got an inch of snow.

I just read they're looking at up to 30-inches this weekend.

That ought to be quite an adventure.

Yup, Congress will be unable to get anything done. Just like on a beautiful Spring day.

I thought about it after bpgreen mentioned lighting his gas stove burners for heat. During our two extended winter outages, we, too, used the gas stove burners for heat, but only while we were awake. But more importantly, the natural gas fireplace really saved the day. Surprisingly (at first), it lights right up using the wall switch even without power. Sure, a wood or pellet stove would be greater insurance for some since you have control over the fuel source, but a gas fireplace sure is convenient.

Yes ,that 1" was a traffic nightmare around here, totally unprepared for it too,no pre-treating of the roads at all.The 2-3 FEET we are suppose to get this weekend will grind the city to a halt.....that is why I am packed and headed to Ocean City,Md tomorrow morning, where the storm will be 99% rain, and only an inch or so snow....gonna escape this monster!

Was in DC this week. They seemed to focus on the big storm and ignored the prelude. It was pretty cold so the 1" was closer to 2 since it stuck quickly, and it iced. They needed salt trucks out, but missed the window. Turned out to be a mini-disaster.

My adjustment to this is to switch to Scotch when 1 ft exceeded.

So far, I'm in the Lucky category (we don't get to be there often) -- 3"-6". It wouldn't have to shift much for that to change.

Until recently, I thought a blizzard meant that there was a lot of snow. But a blizzard doesn't need a lot of snow. It just needs a lot of snow in the air. So you can have a small amount of snow with high winds and you've got a blizzard..

That would do some serious damage to the local insect population!
